Foreign tour firms set for easier travel

The tourism regulator is working on details to further open the market to foreign operators by lowering capital requirements and allowing subsidiaries.

Foreign tour agencies will be treated on par with domestic counterparts when it comes to registered capital, a China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) official has said.

Smithsonian traveling exhibit explores 500 years of food

“Key Ingredients: American by Food, ” a 500-year history of the development of food in America, explores the procurement, preparation and preparation of what we eat.

Put together by the Smithsonian Institute, this traveling exhibit is on display at the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center through Aug. 4.

London will host ATP World Tour Final in 2009

The ATP’s season-ending Tennis Masters Cup will be renamed the ATP World Tour Final and shift from Shanghai to London in 2009. The world’ top singles players and doubles teams will compete in Britain for more than $4.5 million in prize money.

“The world’s best tennis players coming together in the unique and iconic setting of London’s O2 Arena to decide who will be crowned ATP World Tour Final champion, is simply an irresistible and potent mix,” said Etienne de Villiers, executive chairman of the ATP.

German Train Travel Delayed Because of Strikes for Higher Pay

Train travel in parts of Germany was disrupted with delays and cancellations as rail workers seeking a 7 percent pay increase staged a series of warning strikes. Regional travel around the cities of Wismar and Rostock in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were most affected, state railway Deutsche Bahn AG said in a statement. The Transnet and GDBA rail workers unions also planned strikes in and around Frankfurt, Hamburg and Karlsruhe.

Most Taiwanese travel to relieve stress

Taiwan’s annual travel market is worth an estimated NT$340 billion (US$10.37 billion), with nearly 71 percent of respondents to a recent survey saying they travel to relieve stress, pollsters said upon the release of their research yesterday.

The survey was conducted by the Global Views Monthly journal to explore Taiwanese travel activities and preferences. The telephone poll targeted residents between the ages of 20 and 60 in all 23 cities and counties on Taiwan proper.

Indian American adventurer wins major travel award

An Indian American movie special effects expert has won a prestigious travel award for a ride on horseback across remote villages in the Indian desert state of Rajasthan.

Alexander Souri, who has worked on “The Matrix” and “X-Men”, is the founder-director of Relief Riders International (RRI) whose members made the trip in October last year to provide medical and relief supplies to people.
